Grok Bot on Discord: what works and what doesn't

Last checked

There’s no official way to put Grok Bot in a Discord server as of October 25, 2026. xAI’s and Cursor’s Grok Bot docs list Slack as the only chat app a Bot can join, and Connect apps has no Discord plugin. Community-built bridges exist, but they’re unofficial, so you’re trusting someone else’s code with a Discord bot token.

What’s official today

  • Slack, for Team Bots. A published Team Bot can get its own Slack app. Teammates can DM it or @mention it in channels, and it replies in threads. This is the closest official match to “a Bot in my Discord”.
  • Routines triggered by events. Routines can start from a Slack message, a GitHub notification, a Microsoft Teams message, a Linear issue, a Sentry alert, a PagerDuty incident, or a webhook with its own URL and key. Discord isn’t on that list.
  • Your Bot’s browser. A Bot can use websites that don’t have an app, through its browser. xAI notes some sites block automation, and the Bot should hand those steps to you instead of working around them.

People have asked for more. A feature request on the Cursor forum (August 14, 2026) asks for an official Discord plugin that receives messages and replies as the Bot, with server, user and role allowlists.

Your three real options

1. Use Slack instead, if your community can

If you’re choosing a home for a team or a small paid community, Slack plus a Team Bot is the supported path. You get threads, mentions and approval cards, plus your admin controls.

2. Use a community bridge (unofficial)

Several open-source projects on GitHub connect Discord to Grok Bot or to the Grok API. They usually work by running a small program that holds a Discord bot token, listens for @mentions in channels you allow, and passes the message to a Bot or to the API. We haven’t audited any of them. If you try one:

  • Create a fresh Discord bot just for this. Never reuse a token, and store it as a secret, not in chat.
  • Give it the fewest permissions possible: View Channels, Send Messages, Read Message History. Never Administrator.
  • Lock it to specific servers and channels, so strangers can’t trigger it and burn your usage.
  • Keep sends behind approval at first, and watch the first few days closely.
  • Remember the shared computer. Anything the bridge stores on your Bots’ computer can be read by every Bot on your account.

3. Build a Discord bot on the Grok API

If you just want Grok answering questions in your server, and don’t need your Grok Bot’s memory, computer or routines, a normal Discord bot that calls the Grok API is simpler. You’d need an xAI API key and to pay API rates. That’s Grok the model, not Grok Bot.

Moderation and safety checklist

Discord servers are public spaces, and that raises the stakes:

  • Treat every message in the server as untrusted input. A member could try to get the Bot to do something you never asked for.
  • Never give a Discord-facing Bot access to your inbox, payments or anything you’d hate to see posted.
  • Add Ask first rules for posting, deleting, buying and sending.
  • Keep a human moderator in charge of bans and kicks.
  • Bouncer: reviews a public Grok Bot share link or config before you add it. Useful before you install anything community-built.
  • VeilBreaker Guard & Watch: an untrusted-content guard and activity watch for Grok Bot.
  • X Monitor: groups commenters on an X account and flags hostile ones. The same idea applies to community moderation.
  • Chief of Staff: keeps one Bot in charge of handoffs so community requests don’t scatter.

FAQ

Is there an official Grok Bot Discord bot?

No. As of October 25, 2026, xAI hasn’t shipped a Discord plugin or channel for Grok Bot. Any Discord bot claiming to be the official Grok Bot isn’t.

Can Grok Bot read my Discord server?

Not through an official connector. Community plugins exist, but they’re unofficial and need a Discord bot token.

What’s the closest official option?

A Team Bot in Slack. Teammates can DM it or @mention it in channels.

Can a Discord message trigger a routine?

Not directly. Routines can start from a webhook, so a relay you build and secure yourself could forward selected messages. Keep the webhook key private.

What about Telegram?

Same situation. See Can Grok Bot work in Telegram?
